LOLITA

http://slavic.uchicago.edu/faculty-staff/sternstein.shtml

This is my professor for 'Nabokov's Lolita.' She is possibly the most amazing professor I have ever had. I am so so so excited for this class. Just so everyone knows.

AHH! She teaches a course called "Zizek on Film"??! Yes, yes, I know it is hip to be into Zizek but at least David, Dylan, and I like him. You know Mac, I was wondering why there were all these Czech cinema, Robots and Beer:Czech culture, and Czech language courses at UT but apparently we, like UChicago I suppose, have some of the few Slavic departments with a lot of Czech scholars. Good for us. And YOU! There is a Nabokov centered course here too that someone tried to convince me to take last semester. Much to my detriment they didn't succeed.

Niiiice. Cornell's Slavic department is almost all Soviet ex-pats from Moscow and St. Petersburg, so we're not so fortunate.

However, we got Yuri Orlov and Slava Paperno, who are two of the most beautiful human beings I have ever had the fortune of meeting, so it's OK.

I keep meaning to read Lolita, but I also keep meaning to read hundreds of books (many of which are taunting me on my desk right now). When I finally get to it, we'll have to talk, yeah?

Yes, of course we will. Also, from the sounds of it, Yuri is a better person than Slava. In an objective way. But I think I like Slava a whole lot more.

I read Lolita. I think Mac and I talked about it already. Probably a lot.

I think Pierson's Master is in the Slavic department. He's really, really Jewish. I think he might hate Switzerland. He sends us lots of emails, and sometimes they're inspirational quotes with commentary, and sometimes they're ridiculous jokes about Jewish people. I usually forward those to Dom. You guys can get them too, if you want. I can send them your way.

Anyway, I don't study anything Slavic at all, but the guy is fantastic.

Continuing with the whole Slavic departments thing, this is possibly the greatest thing to ever come out of Russia. This is a birthday song, by the way. About a wizard that comes in a light blue helicopter and gives Gena the crocodile 500 ice creams...

I love that song! We had to learn how to sing it this year!

I maintain, however, that Vinni Puh is way cuter and much more badass:
